Top Seven Hiking Tips

Without a doubt, the best way to explore the treasures of Australia is to hike and camp along the way. When planning your hiking vacation, there are a few things to keep in mind so that your trip is memorable for all the right reasons. Many of the hundreds of parks in this complex country are remote and the lack of planning could be gravely serious.

The terrain across Australia varies greatly so you want to match the route that you are taking to your skill and endurance levels. If you are new to hiking, do not plan to tackle the rougher landscapes no matter how tempting the trek may be. Injuries can end up being catastrophic in the wilderness.

Be prepared is not just a Boy Scout motto, it is also the motto of experienced hikers.

1 - Haul out all of the hiking gear you will be taking and ensure that it is broken in and in working order before you head off on that hike of a lifetime. Nothing is worse than to get serious blisters or be missing a tent pole when you are at the end of the first day of a multi-day hike. It could bring your anticipated getaway to a screeching halt.

2 - A first aid kit is an essential. Make sure that you have one appropriate for the area that you are venturing into. Often help is many miles away so you have to be self-sufficient. Your cell phone may get no signal so don't count on it to save you.

3 - Water is vital to your survival. Many parks have no potable water stations so you must look after your needs. Don't drink water directly from a natural water source or you may suffer dearly for it.

4 - Become familiar with the wildlife that you may encounter. You want to ensure that you don't accidentally entice dingoes or other predators by leaving temptation lying about.

5 - Pack sunscreen with a high SPF. The sun, even on an overcast day, can burn your skin badly. Why spoil a great hike because of a horrible sunburn.

6 - Take appropriate clothing and include a hat that shades your face. Many areas are hot during the day & very cool when the sun goes down so be prepared. Tak a sweatshirt and long pants no matter what the weather forecast is. You just never know what Mother Nature will throw at you.

7 - Make sure to leave a map of your route and date of return with someone. Advise them that you will call if your plans change otherwise they are to contact the rangers should you not return on the day specified. This could save your life if you have gotten injured or lost.

Pack wisely and remember to pack out everything you pack in, including your garbage. This beautiful country deserves to be respected and have no permanent trace of your visit.
