1. La Jolla is one of the most gorgeous areas on the San Diego coast. With various beaches, and a beautiful cove, you should be prepared to have your breath taken away. The Cove is great for shallow snorkeling, kayaking, and fishing. The sand here is very course, so not idea for sand castles, and there isn't a ton of actual beach space, but it is stunning nonetheless.
2. Black's Beach is one of the most popular beaches among locals because of its great surf, as well as out of the way location. Most tourists do not head to this beach because you have to head down a 1/2 mile steep hill in order to get there. If you head down too far, you will encounter the beginnings of a nude beach.
3. Del Mar is known for it's beautiful houses, safe neighborhoods, and clean shores. This beach is extremely family-friendly, and comes complete with volleyball nets. During the season, it can get pretty crowded with tourists, but it is never as bad as most of the other beaches.
4. Mission Beach is your answer if you're looking for that college, touristy, summery feel. With a short span of beach between the shops and the shore, you can hear music playing at the restaurants while you sit in the sun. This beach is perfect for relaxed sunbathing since it is so flat. You are never more than a few steps away from a souvenir shop or restaurant, and it is extremely busy and crowded during the summer months.
5. Coronado's Municipal Beach is one of the most popular and famous beaches. Located on Coronado Island, its fine sand is soft and pleasant, while it's guests are relaxed and quiet. There are quiet a few tourists at this beach year-round because of the famous Hotel del Coronado.
