Alternatives to Hiking the Inca Trail

Getting to the Machu Picchu ruins is a bit of a mission at the best of times (I think that was the idea when the Incas built it). Hiking to the ruins is a genuine challenge but increasingly the challenge is more to do with beating all the other tourists to book and then finding your own space on the crowded trail. This lost city has certainly been found, and by a staggering number of tourists.

On my trip to the ruins I never expected to have to join an orderly queue in order to reach the Sun Gate after four days of hiking in the wilderness. In fact, because of this bottleneck at the entrance to the ancient city, the best moments of the hike were far from the ruins themselves. The quiet moments when other hikers disappeared from view and you got a glimpse of snow capped mountain and could let your Indiana Jones imagination run free.

For these reasons travellers have been looking more and more for alternative hikes to the Inca trail. This is good for two reasons: One, there are some lesser known beautiful and challenging options out there, and two, since a whole lot of mud fell on the trail in January, the trail has been closed until March and possibly even April. So if you planned to hike the trail this year and have been beaten to it by the mudslides or you just like your space when hiking through the Andes, here are some Inca trail alternatives:

Choquequiro

This hike gets you to the mystical mountain fortress known as Choquequiro. Just a cool and Machu Picchu, Choquequiro is far less popular with tourists and offers a more remote experience. This is a seriously challenging hike, which does not have the same high altitudes as the trail. Unlike the trail, it is not compulsory to have a guide for this route, but unless you are very experienced this is still a good idea. You won't bump into many other hikers, but you may meet some of the local mountain folk.

Cordillera Huayhuash

The Cordillera Huayhuash circuit located north of Lima and is a huge 16 day trail with demanding hiking. This trek should be at the top of your list if you like a challenge and want to experience views of glaciers and snowy peaks rather than the back of someone else's' backpack. Trekkers pass through 12 distinct high passes and climb above 18,000 feet. The Huayhuash Circuit is for the experienced adventure types.

Salkantay trail

The Salkantay trail is 75km over five days, via Mount Salkantay, and reaches altitude of 4600 m. Higher and quieter than the Inca trail, this route will still bring you to Machu Picchu on the final day. Although day two is pretty tough, this trail is similar in difficulty to the trail. A good option for a quieter hike at any time, but will also be affected by the recent mudslide closure.

2) Don't go hog wild eating at every meal! For example, if I know I'll be having a big dinner, I may have just a yogurt for breakfast or a salad for lunch. No, you will not as healthily as at home, but don't go crazy. I sometimes will keep some food in my room so I can have a snack without being tempted to order an entire meal.

3) Sleep! Too many people do not sleep enough while traveling. I know I don't sleep as well, e specially the first night, so I try to compensate by getting to bed slightly early at least once or twice, more if often.

Staying fit and healthy on the road takes some effort, but staying active, not eating horrifically, and getting enough rest is a great start.

The Natural Wonders of West Bali National Park

Rock Out in Budapest

Music fans can rock out all the way from Budapest airport to city with a shuttle tour of the area's hot and happening music hotspots. As both an airport shuttle driver and music fan I thought I'd share a few of my favourite places in the city. So buckle up your seatbelt and let's get ready to rock and roll.

Frank Zappa was a huge fan of Budapest and the city was luckily enough to house one of his last ever concerts back in 1991. I remember the day like it was yesterday, although I was only a young university student at the time. He was playing a concert to commemorate the removal of Soviet troops from Hungary, and with the town mayor present it was certainly an historic occasion. What made it even more fantastic was that he joined some local gipsy bands on stage and started jamming with them. My friend, Czigany, plays accordion in one of these bands and nearly 20 years later she still talks about the day that she jammed with Zappa on stage.

As Frank Zappa commemorated such an important occasion in our city's history we like to commemorate him in return, and what better way to do this than with the Zappa Cafe. I've taken many tourists here on my Budapest airport to city runs and whilst it may be popular, every rocker worth their weight in salt knows that it is the place to start an evening. I'd recommend sampling the hearty beef stew, but if you're just here for the beer then make like the locals and try the plum palinska. But be warned it isn't for the faint-hearted!

The underground hall in the Zappa Cafe has its own stage and usually has its own live music on a weeknight. Just recently we had a Hungarian band called the Magic Cats playing and these were a big hit with the locals. If there's no music on at the Zappa Cafe then we'll head over to Rocktogon, known for its acoustic sessions and chilled out atmosphere. When live bands are not playing, the atmosphere shifts and the DJ can often be found putting on loud punk music and heavy rock and roll which is guaranteed to have the crowd moshing until the early hours. If that all sounds a little too hardcore for you, then you can sway along to lighter rock at the disco sessions that take place regularly between 8pm and 11.30pm.

My shuttle rounds aren't always from Budapest airport to city and I have been known to drive a bit further afield. The Raday is located slightly out of town but I'd definitely recommend it to anyone with a love of music. It's more of a pub than a bustling nightclub, but it's great place to enjoy a couple of beers whilst sticking a tune on the old juke box.

If my Budapest airport to city passengers ask, I won't hesitate to recommend them some great Hungarian rock music. The punk band, CPG are a particular favourite of mine and were one of the first bands in Hungary to be arrested for rock-related subversion, spending two years in prison for political incitement. The prog rock band, Panta Rhei, and metal group, Fallenintoashes are also very good. But don't take my word for it; book a trip to Hungary and you'll be able to experience the fantastic scene for yourself.

The Rufus Stone

The Rufus Stone is one of the New Forests most ancient monuments, as well as a reminder of the origins of the Forest itself. The stone, which is clad in iron, marks the supposed spot of King William II (or King William Rufus as he was also know) death.

During a hunting trip on the 2nd August 1100 William and his men were in pursuit of a stag when he and Sir Walter Tyrell, the Kings best archer, became separated from the group. When the King and Sir Tyrell came upon the stag Sir Tyrell shot an arrow after it, unfortunately though the arrow hit an oak tree and ricocheted off straight into the chest of the King were the arrow killed him almost instantly. Sir Walter Tyrell then understandably fled to France fearing he would be charged with murder. Allegedly, along the way Tyrell stopped at a black smith and had his horse shod with backward facing horseshoes in order to confuse those after him.

King William's body remained undiscovered until the following morning when a group of local discovered him on the forest floor with an arrow in his chest. The nobles had abandoned him fearing that the death of the King would lead to a claps of law and order so fearing for their own estates they fled. It was then left to a local peasant to take the Kings body to Winchester Cathedral for burial, or so legend has it.

There is another version of events however. The alternate telling of the story says that sir Walter Tyrell deliberately murder the King who was disliked by his own court, his people and the church and was regarded as a ruthless tyrant. Norman ambition and the general dislike of Rufus make a strong and compelling conspiracy theory, though after hundreds of year and the only two witnesses' long dead, it is perhaps a story where we will never know the truth.

Although the oak tree that played such a pivotal role in the death of a King no longer stands, a mature oak believed to be a direct descendant stands in its place.

After visiting the stone why not head to the near by Sir Walter Tyrell pub where you can muse over a drink whether it was an accident or not and whether the pubs namesake was a murderer, a liberator or just a very unfortunate man.

The question is not: what to wear on a cruise? - But is: What to bring and when to wear it?. Cruise dress codes fall into three categories casual, informal and formal. I will define these categories later on, but for now just remember that a cruise is an elegant experience that everyone should experience. Watching the sun go down behind the oceans horizon will truly cast a spell on you and your partner, a memory never to be forgotten.

Cruises have a defined evening schedule. The dress codes for the scheduled events are strictly adhered to, so it is important that you are prepared with all the necessary attire to get the full benefit out of your holiday. Daily dress codes take affect after 6pm. Before 6pm every day is casual.

Included in the final documentation for your cruise should be a schedule. This schedule is a complete itinerary of your time on and off the ship. More important however it will clearly define the theme for each day/evening and what the expected dress code will be for each event.

A typical 7 day cruise will consist of

· Two formal nights

· Two casual nights

· One to four informal nights

Plan for success-Make a list

You will typically have limited luggage space unless you are planning on paying for extra luggage so careful planning is in order to ensure you have enough outfits for every event. Wearing the same cocktail dress twice will never be noticed if you accessorize it differently. Changing your purse, jewelry, shoes and a shawl will give a different look for any outfit.

Some people wear long gowns on cruises but a shorter formal dress is just as acceptable unless you're on the most exotic cruises.

Casual Wear-Informal Wear-Formal Wear

Before we proceed any further, we need to differentiate between casual, informal and formal wear. This will allow us to put the dress codes in prospective.

Casual Wear

Casual wear should be comfortable. Depending on your plans for the day your clothing should match the activities. Warm weather on the ship will require your choice of swimwear, cover-up and sandals. Day trips ashore will dictate shorts with tee shirts or polo style shirts and comfortable strolling shoes. You can also plan on buying tops while you are shopping however keep in mind that you need room to bring them home. Mix and Match will save packing room and give you a different look as your cruise progresses.

Evening casual is slightly a different story. Shorts are not considered acceptable evening casual wear. A women's evening causal wardrobe consists of skirts, tops, pant outfits or sporty dresses. Focusing on two colors that can be combined, you can mix and match with different accessories for a complete different look for every casual event.

Keep in mind the first night and last night are typically casual nights. You likely won't have your luggage before dinner on the first night and your luggage will already be packed for the last evening.

Some cruise lines discourage jeans in their dining rooms on casual evenings. For the most part you can get away with them but you will likely feel out of place. Use common sense when it comes to jeans. Plus jeans are hot; you should consider a lighter material.

A word of caution, short shorts are only acceptable in the fitness center and while you are at the pool. They are strictly shunned upon while walking around the cruise ship so make sure you have a cover-up if you plan on walking around the cruise ship in your swimsuit or short shorts.

Informal

Informal wear is a grey area when it comes to cruise lines. Your best bet is to review the definition of "informal wear" defined by the cruise line you are traveling on. This definition can be found on their website and travel brochures.

The general rule for informal wear is that it only applies to evening activities. Informal wear consists of a dressier dress or pants outfit. Many cruise lines have dropped the informal category and replaced it with resort casual, which is slightly more formal than casual wear.

Formal

The formal night on cruise ships for lack of a better term is the Cinderella effect. The dress code for women will range from simple cocktail dresses to the most formal shimmering gowns. If you have been to a graduation, wedding or similar formal gathering your outfit will surely meet the dress code and make you shine.

The most important piece of formal wear a woman can own is a pair of silky black dress pants. They take up no room in a suitcase, can be mixed and matched for different occasions and typically have an elastic waistband which comes in handy as your holiday progresses while eating all of the rich food typically provided on a cruise.

Wraps

Cruise ships keep their indoor temperatures on the cool side and evening temperatures on the deck will cool off so include a wrap in your wardrobe to fend off the chill after a day in the sun.

A cover up will save you a great deal of time on a cruise ship. You can wear your swimsuit by the pool, throw on your cover up and venture into the lunch buffet without going back to your cabin to change.

Shoes

Comfortable shoes are a must for sightseeing, deck shoes with a rubber type sole will be an asset for strolling aboard the ship.

High heels are permitted but remember cruise ships are big and you will spend a good portion of your day strolling from place to place. Comfort is the key.

Hats

Kids, Travel and a Lesson

In keeping with my future career aspirations as Captain Obvious, I thought I'd tell parents out there something they already know. Ready? Here goes; a sleep deprived, overly tired kid is as well mannered as an underfed, moderately agitated badger with a sore tooth. Now don't overwhelm me with letters of gratitude lauding my insightful brilliance. Your undying devotion will suffice. But, in all seriousness, that less than mystical wisdom serves a point that I'll get to eventually in this article.

My rediscovery of the wisdom I shared above came during a summer family vacation. With wife, two kids and a pair of in-laws in tow, I set off for a beach vacation with visions of forming a new family tradition that would be deeply cherished and oft repeated. Usually my wife interjects a bit of sanity into my visions because she knows from experience that things rarely go as I think they will. This time around she was asleep at the wheel.

See, I often have visions. Unfortunately, whatever part of my brain is responsible for coming up with visions is a bit short-sighted. Actually, it's more myopic in the same sense that water is a bit wet. My vision center is effectively blind. Stevie Wonder blind. Also a little bit deaf and it has extremely poor fashion sense. I digress. The point is, I'm so prone to over-indulging fantasies of perfection that it should come as no surprise that my plan to birth fond memories during the first event in what would be a long tradition fell mostly flat on its face. Why? Glad you asked.

See, having kids, I know they can be royal nightmares when they don't get enough sleep. My wife will tell you I'm not any better when sleep deprived and I'm not going to pretend she's exactly Pollyanna when the Sandman skips our house at night either. Knowing all of this, you'd think I would have investigated our destination more thoroughly and determined in advance that there weren't enough beds to accommodate all six of us. But I didn't.

The inevitable result of my excess enthusiasm getting in the way of my common sense was that all four members of my family shared one bed while my brother and sister-in-law lounged comfortably on a bed together. This is where I should interject another brilliant gem of wisdom - kids are astoundingly mobile sleepers and exceptionally accurate kickers - a fact I discovered in the wee hours of our first cramped night sharing a bed thanks to my son's knee taking the initiative to ensure I'm henceforth incapable of reproducing any more children.

Now all you need to really round out this Wes Craven version of a family vacation is the fact that I am the most talented snorer you're likely to ever meet and my wife sometimes suffers from night terrors when stressed, overly fatigued and/or sleeping in a strange place. With that you can begin to connect the dots and imagine just how fantastic my dream vacation at the beach turned out. Let me grab the crayon for a sec and I'll creatively color in some of the highlights.

As already mentioned, night one involved my son kneeing me in the groin. I mention that first because, to a guy, that's the most significant kneeing you can experience so it deserves first billing. But, I'd be failing in the full disclosure area if I didn't mention that he also kicked me in one shin, elbowed me in the ribs and scratched my other shin with a toenail that was promptly trimmed the following morning despite his protests. On top of all of that, my wife also elbowed me in the ribs a few times to stop me from snoring. You can guess, folks, that I wasn't exactly a bundle of flowers and cuddly bunny fur the next morning. My wife and the brood were no more pleasant than I, though in my self-indulgent misery, I couldn't for the life of me figure out what the heck they were complaining about.

Our second night was much like the first only the family jewels were spared any additional mauling. But, to keep it interesting, my wife and I had invested so much of our day on the beach worrying about sun screen for our kids that we neglected ourselves. So knees in the groin were replaced with sunburns. There were also further kicks to the shins, elbows to the ribs and a brief hushed argument in which my wife complained about my snoring and I spit back that, absent a constructive suggestion to fix the problem, she could go jump of a pier.

Hugs, smiles and laughter were notably absent on day three. What little conversation we exchanged consisted mostly of trying to guess what hard, foreign objects the owner of the rental beach house might be hiding in the mattress we were sleeping on. Seriously, if there's a large supply of missing rocks and gravel somewhere in the US, I know exactly where it's being stored. We all slept longer that night out of pure exhaustion but weren't any better rested the next morning. And that's where the results of too little quality sleep really began to show in my kids.

My son, Nick, is an adventurous sort. He's full of questions, always in motion and inevitably tests boundaries to see what he can get away with before threats of time-out begin to surface. Ordinarily, I encourage him to explore his creative excesses because I think it's healthy. But when Nick doesn't get enough sleep, testing boundaries takes on new meaning. When he's tired, he tests boundaries in the same way Genghis Khan tested the military resolve of his neighbors by slaughtering all of them. I mean to say that Nick experiments with limits in the same way Saddam Hussein experimented with a minor border incursion into Kuwait. And God help you if you aren't mentally prepared or well rested yourself because you will need ALL your faculties primed and intact to deal with Nick when he gets that way.

Needless to say, after three days of horrid sleep on the cramped and crowded surface of the iron maiden of all mattresses, my wife and I were in no way equipped to deal with Nick. Thankfully, we had a solution in the form of my brother and sister-in-law. We begged them to baby-sit. After all, they'd been sleeping fine in their own room. What I mean to say is we pathetically threw ourselves on their mercy and asked them to watch the kids for just a few hours so my wife and I could get out of the house and have a brief brush with sanity, a quiet, childless dinner and a moment to recharge before facing The Beast (Nick's nickname) again. Fools... er...friends that they are, they agreed.

After an all too short respite, my wife and I returned to the beach house to find it in a nearly post-apocalyptic state. If you're picturing the final scene in the original Planet of the Apes where Charlton Heston finds part of the statue of liberty sticking out from the sand or something out of a Mad Max movie, you've pretty much captured the damage my kids were able to do while we were gone.

My usually prim and put-together sister-in-law greeted us at the door, one naked and kicking child under one arm and the other crying somewhere in the background, with the most perfect lunatic asylum escapee face you've ever seen on a woman. Her husband glanced at us as we entered, walked past us without a word and stormed out onto the deck where he began a stormy and very serious relationship with a bottle of scotch, pausing only long enough to console his wife when she joined him and broke down in tears. As for my wife and I, we began the tremendous challenge of cleaning up with an abundance of guilt and embarrassment between us.

Now I'd love to tell you we somehow salvaged everything, turned all of this around and ended our trip on a high note. I'd be lying. The closest we came to any high notes were the glass-shattering screams my daughter regularly unleashed on us in one of her rare-form tantrums and the blood-curdling horror movie night-terror shriek my wife let out at 3:30 AM on night five (waking the entire household and some shocked and frightened neighbors too) due to the stressed conditions and lack of sleep.

Day six and a 3 hour drive saw us safely home. We'd cut our trip short by a day (our only smart move of the whole trip) and, once safely back on home turf, each went our separate ways for the remainder of the day before finally crawling off for the first good night of sleep in a week in our comfy, luxurious and oh-so-spacious beds.

Now this needlessly lengthy retelling of a trip I'm sure some of you can relate to wasn't entirely because I love to write long articles. The main reason was to finally get to the point that, with a little forward thinking and very little extra money spent, I could have avoided the entire mess. All it would have required would have been a couple inexpensive inflatable mattresses for the kids. Ok, maybe an extra mattress pad for "The Grinder," which is the moniker we assigned to the horrid bed of back-mangling agony we'd enjoyed on our trip, but mostly the air mattresses because they'd have allowed us all the extra room we needed to spread out and sleep more comfortably.

The entire event and the simple solution I discovered in hindsight, believe it or not, resulted in what I can only describe as a rebirth. It spawned the purchase of a high-end air mattress bed for our own home, the purchase of travel air mattresses for the kids and even inspired me to create an entire blog devoted to air mattresses of all kinds. But, mostly, our excruciatingly painful week at the beach taught me that as long as nature continues refusing to provide us with instruction manuals on raising our kids, we really have to step up to the plate and use that slab of jelly between our ears to plan ahead or face the consequences.

Now if you'll excuse me, Nick just walked by my home office dragging some rope and a pipe wrench behind him. Something tells me I should probably look into that.

What to Pack For Road Trips

Ah, the age old question of what you should pack for road trips. This shouldn't be such a big deal, but more often than not there are many of us who labor over what we should bring with us on lengthy road trips to our relatives' homes or to friends' homes or even if we are just going on a brief vacation.

The truth of the matter is that whether you are packing for a long road trip to visit friends and family or a brief trip from your home to your work office, you should always have at least an emergency road kit in your car, complete with a first aid kit, flashlight, batteries, ice scraper, non perishable food, and a couple of bottles of water. It is also advisable that you have an emergency list of phone numbers written down somewhere. As archaic as this may seem, technology is not foolproof. Cell phones can malfunction; batteries can die, and then god forbid- you may actually have to use a pay phone in order to get in touch with someone. Therefore, it is also adivsable that you keep a small pouch filled with change (more quarters than pennies, etc.).

In my own vehicle, I keep a small pouch hidden between the driver's seat and the door panel where I keep any loose change that accumulates from whenever I pay for something with cash.
